Population covers persons aged 15 and over, living in private households (those living in collective households, i.e. residential homes, boarding houses, hospitals, religious institutions, workers' hostels, etc., are not included). This comprises all persons living in the households surveyed during the reference week. The definition also includes persons absent from the households for short periods (but retaining a link with the private household in question) owing to studies, holidays, illness, business trips, etc. Persons on obligatory military service are not included.

Figures from 2000-2004 consist of data from the 2nd quarter of the respective year. From 2005 and onwards figures are calculated averages based on quarterly figures.

Total population = mean population in 1000 persons.

Unknown = mean population less number of people in densely, intermediate and thinly populated areas.

Data is collected from the Labour Force Survey (LFS) which is an inquiry directed to households, designed to obtain information on the labour market and related issues through a series of personal interviews. LFS adopted a new methodology from 2021 onwards, leading to a break in time series for all countries in 2021. For more information regarding the new methodology and its implications, see this article.

There are additional breaks in time series and some points show low reliability. Please refer to Eurostat (table: lfsq_pgauws) and related metadata for more information.
